What is Beach Glass?
Back Print Page Email Page

Beach Glass is glass that people have discarded into the sea, rivers, and lakes... maybe left on shore and carried away by the tides. Bottles, glasses, jugs, and dishes, pottery... the possibilities are endless!

What we do know is it's a product of man that has been broken on the bottom of the sea, shaped and smoothed by the currents, tides, rocks and sand.... eventually washing up on the shore.

Where Does Beach Glass Come From

Beach Glass is basically pollution made by man, carelessly thrown away old Medicine Stopper.... pollution that the ocean has taken and turned into something beautiful, something that captures the imagination of young and old. When you find beach glass your imagination and curiosity is peaked, you think "Wow, where could it have come from?", "How far did it travel?", "What was it?", "How long has it been in the sea?", "Who else has touched it?" , "Maybe it came from a ship wreck?", and finally, "What can I do with it?"

We, at "Hudson Oddities", let our "imagination run wild"!

SEAFOAM GLASS

Seafoam colored glass held a mystery to us until recently. We were not sure where this color originated, but as luck would have it, Seafoom Glass. I was lucky enough to find a Seafoam bottle bottom with the print still intact enough to make out the word "Barcardi"! With this "new information"; I emailed the Barcardi Company and included a picture of the glass to see if they could give us an idea as to when they produced bottles in this color.

I soon got a response informing me that color of glass was used by Barcardi in the 1920's-1930's during the days of Prohibition! This new information made the Seafoam colored glass even more interesting to us! It made me wonder .. "Could some of this glass have been among the bottles being smuggled across borders during prohibition?"

One never knows!

BLUE GLASS

The "Blue Glass" is always a wonderful find! This color is rare indeed! We know a lot of the Blue Glass comes from Noxzema and Milk of Magnesia bottles. A lot of fishermen used Noxzema to soothe sunburn, and the Milk of Magnesia for sea sickness.

BROWN GLASS

"Brown Glass" has always been assumed to be from beer bottles, but also from "JAVEX" bottles. In a recent information search the Colgate Company informed me that Javex Brown Glasswas bottled in brown bottles from 1930-1960's. The picture above is an example of Javex bottle bottoms that we have been lucky enough to find.
